Naval Station Norfolk is a United States Navy Base that supports naval forces in the United States Fleet Forces Command that are operating in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and the Indian Ocean. Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval station supporting over 75 ships and housing the largest concentration of U.S. Navy Forces. Naval Station Norfolk is located near Norfolk, Virginia. The Hampton Roads region has many special programs available to students. Several elementary, middle and high schools as well as magnet and special education schools are offered. For specific information regarding school programs, information can be obtained by contacting the Virginia Department of Education at 757-622-2312. Home schooling is also available if parents fill out an intent letter and submit it to the Chesapeake Public School District. For more information on the home schooling process, call the Director of Student Enrollment at Chesapeake Public Schools at 547-0153.
Housing at Naval Station Norfolk is limited with only 70 family housing units available. Most employees and military personnel live off post in single-family dwellings or apartments. Wait lists for on-post housing can be long, and nearby hotels and motels offer temporary lodging for those needed extended stay options.
