Local Sports

None of the Hampton Roads cities have a major league team, but local teams include the Norfolk Tides AAA baseball team, Norfolk Admirals ice hockey team, and the athletics programs of Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University.

Many of the local parks have sports fields, and sports complexes are fairly easy to locate; the odds are good that whatever your sport, there's a local team or league.

Golfing is popular in Virginia, and Norfolk has a fairly large number of golf courses.

The Virginia coast, bays, rivers, and other waterways are extensive, and the area has a lot of excellent sailing, boating, and fishing.

Fishing in Virginia (licensed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries) includes bass, crappie, bluegill, flier, sunfish, warmouth, perch, pike, trout, catfish, shad, carp, gar, and drum. Check regulations carefully; certain species of herring are illegal. Marine fishing (which is handled by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission) includes amberjack, american eel, various kinds of drum, sea bass, catfish, bluefish, cobia, trout, groupers, mackerel, scup, certain kinds of shark, shad, and spadefish.

Hunting:
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries regulates hunting in the state, and licenses for bear, deer, elk, turkey, crow, groundhog, grouse, quail, pheasants, rabbit, squirrel, dove, woodcock, snipe, rail, goose, and teal. Trappable furbearers include bobcat, coyote, fox, opossum, skunk, and raccoon.
